Start with the coil, not the brand

The single specification that determines how a kit behaves is coil resistance, printed on the coil in ohms.

• Above 1.0 ohm — a tight, cigarette-like draw, modest vapour, pairs with 10ml 50/50 or nic salt liquid at higher strengths.
• 0.6 to 1.0 ohm — a looser draw, more vapour, usually paired with mid-range strengths.
• Below 0.6 ohm (sub-ohm) — a lot of vapour, needs VG-heavy shortfill liquid and much lower nicotine.

Pick the draw you want first. The kit follows from that, and the liquid follows from the kit.

Pods, coils and the running cost

The purchase price is not the running cost. A kit is bought once; coils or pods are consumable and replaced when the flavour drops off — typically every one to two weeks with regular use. Before buying, check the replacements are stocked and what they cost, because that is what you will actually be paying month to month.

What the 2025 rules changed

Since 1 June 2025, devices sold in the UK must be rechargeable and refillable, with replaceable coils or pods. Everything on this page meets that. Tanks and pods are separately capped at 2ml capacity, and nicotine liquid at 20mg/ml.

If this is your first kit

Our beginner vape kits narrow this page to devices that arrive ready to use with a straightforward pod system and no settings to configure. It is the shorter list, and for a first device it is the better one.

MTL and DTL

Two draw styles, and the words appear all over device listings.

• MTL (mouth to lung) — draw into the mouth first, then inhale. A tight draw, narrow airflow, higher-resistance coils, higher-strength 10ml liquid.
• DTL (direct to lung) — draw straight into the lungs. An airy draw, wide airflow, sub-ohm coils, VG-heavy shortfill at much lower nicotine.

Almost everything on this page is MTL or a restricted variation of it, which is what suits the 10ml liquid range.

Battery and charging

Most kits here charge over USB-C. Charge before the battery is completely flat rather than after, do not leave a device charging unattended overnight, and use the cable supplied or an equivalent — a fast phone charger can push more current than a small device expects.

What to buy with the kit

A kit alone is not usable. You will need liquid — 10ml 50/50 or nic salt for almost everything here — and a spare pod or coil, because they run out without much warning. Checking the replacements are stocked before you buy the device saves a fortnight of waiting later.

Looking after it

Keep the device upright when not in use, wipe the contacts if it starts misfiring, and prime every new pod by filling it and waiting five minutes before the first puff. That one habit accounts for most of the difference between a pod lasting its full life and dying on day one.

Choosing in three questions

1. How do you want to draw on it? A tight, cigarette-like draw means MTL and a coil above 1.0 ohm. An airy, high-vapour draw means sub-ohm. Everything else follows from this.
2. Prefilled or refillable pods? Prefilled is fewer decisions and costs more per millilitre. Refillable is cheaper to run and opens the whole liquid range.
3. What will the replacements cost? The device is bought once; pods or coils recur every one to two weeks. That is the real monthly cost, and it is worth checking before choosing rather than after.

The terms you will meet, in plain English

The five mistakes that cost people money

1. Not priming a new pod. One dry first puff can ruin a coil permanently. Fill it, wait five minutes.
2. Thick liquid in a small coil. A VG-heavy shortfill in a pod built for 50/50 will not wick, and burns within a few puffs.
3. Buying pods on brand alone. Ranges within one brand rarely interchange. Match the range name off the device, not from memory.
4. Chasing strength instead of hardware. If a setup feels too weak, the device is more often the cause than the number on the bottle.
5. Filling a pod to the very top. With no air gap, pressure changes push liquid out through the airway. Fill to just below the line.

What UK law fixes, in one place

These apply to every retailer selling lawfully in the UK, so a product advertised outside them is a reason to look closely at where it came from. They are also why the range looks the way it does — a 10ml bottle is not a small version of something bigger, it is the whole category for nicotine liquid.
