What the ratio actually changes

VG is the thicker of the two and produces the vapour. PG is thinner, carries flavour more sharply and accounts for most of the throat sensation. At 50/50 the liquid is thin enough to feed a small coil reliably, which is the whole point — a VG-heavy liquid in a pod designed for 50/50 will not wick fast enough and the coil burns.

Which hardware this suits

• Refillable pod kits with coils above roughly 0.8 ohm
• MTL tanks, where the draw is tighter and the airflow narrower
• Any device whose instructions specify 50/50 or "high PG"

If your device came with a recommendation, follow it over any general advice — wicking port size varies more between devices than the categories suggest.

A note on PG

A minority of people find high-PG liquids drying or irritating. If that is you, a higher-VG liquid in hardware designed for it is the usual alternative — but check the device supports it before switching, not after.

Why a pod leaks

Leaking is usually one of three things, and only one of them is the liquid. A liquid thinner than the coil was designed for will seep through the wicking ports; a pod not fully seated will weep from the base; and a pod filled to the very top leaves no air gap, so pressure changes push liquid out. Fill to just below the maximum line, seat the pod firmly, and check the ratio the device asks for.

Storage

Keep bottles closed, upright, out of direct sunlight and away from heat. Darkening with age is oxidation of the flavourings rather than spoilage, though flavour fades. Check the best-before date on the bottle or carton.

50/50 and nic salts side by side

Both are 10ml, both come at the same strengths and both suit the same refillable pod kits, which is why the distinction confuses people. The difference is in how the nicotine is formulated, and it shows up mainly at the top of the range: 20mg in a salt is generally described as smoother at the throat than 20mg in a freebase 50/50. Lower down, the two are much closer, and flavour choice matters more than format.

Choosing in three questions

Almost every liquid decision comes down to the same three, in this order.

1. What does your device take? A pod kit or MTL tank wants 10ml 50/50 or nic salt. A sub-ohm kit wants a VG-heavy shortfill. Getting this wrong is what burns coils, and no change of flavour will fix it.
2. What strength? Low-power devices are generally paired with the upper end of the range, higher-power devices with much lower strengths, because power decides how much liquid — and therefore how much nicotine — each puff delivers.
3. What flavour? Only now. It is the part everyone starts with and the part that matters least to whether the setup works.

If a setup is not working, change one variable at a time and keep the other two fixed. Changing device, strength and flavour together leaves no way to tell which one was the problem.

1. Not priming a new pod. One dry first puff can ruin a coil permanently. Fill it, wait five minutes.
2. Thick liquid in a small coil. A VG-heavy shortfill in a pod built for 50/50 will not wick, and burns within a few puffs.
3. Buying pods on brand alone. Ranges within one brand rarely interchange. Match the range name off the device, not from memory.
4. Chasing strength instead of hardware. If a setup feels too weak, the device is more often the cause than the number on the bottle.
5. Filling a pod to the very top. With no air gap, pressure changes push liquid out through the airway. Fill to just below the line.
