The single most common mistake is putting a high-VG shortfill into a small pod designed for 50/50. The liquid is too thick to wick properly, the coil runs dry and the flavour turns burnt within a few puffs.
Reading a VG/PG ratio
VG (vegetable glycerine) is the thicker of the two and carries the vapour; PG (propylene glycol) is thinner, carries flavour and gives more of a throat sensation. A 50/50 liquid is thin enough for small coils. A 70/30 VG-heavy liquid needs the larger wicking ports found on sub-ohm hardware.
Why nicotine bottles stop at 10ml
UK regulations cap nicotine-containing e-liquid at 20mg/ml and limit bottles containing nicotine to 10ml. Shortfills exist because of that rule rather than in spite of it: they are supplied at 0mg in a larger bottle with headroom, and a separate 10ml nicotine shot is added by the buyer if wanted.

Matching liquid to coil resistance
Coil resistance is printed on the coil in ohms and is the specification that decides which liquid will work.

Get this pairing right and most other problems disappear. Get it wrong and no amount of changing flavour will fix the result.
Storage
Keep bottles closed, upright, out of direct sunlight and away from heat. Liquid darkens over time as the flavourings oxidise — that is normal and not by itself a sign a bottle has gone off, though the flavour will fade. Most bottles carry a best-before date on the label or carton.

Choosing in three questions
Almost every liquid decision comes down to the same three, in this order.
- What does your device take? A pod kit or MTL tank wants 10ml 50/50 or nic salt. A sub-ohm kit wants a VG-heavy shortfill. Getting this wrong is what burns coils, and no change of flavour will fix it.
- What strength? Low-power devices are generally paired with the upper end of the range, higher-power devices with much lower strengths, because power decides how much liquid — and therefore how much nicotine — each puff delivers.
- What flavour? Only now. It is the part everyone starts with and the part that matters least to whether the setup works.
If a setup is not working, change one variable at a time and keep the other two fixed. Changing device, strength and flavour together leaves no way to tell which one was the problem.
The terms you will meet, in plain English

The five mistakes that cost people money
- Not priming a new pod. One dry first puff can ruin a coil permanently. Fill it, wait five minutes.
- Thick liquid in a small coil. A VG-heavy shortfill in a pod built for 50/50 will not wick, and burns within a few puffs.
- Buying pods on brand alone. Ranges within one brand rarely interchange. Match the range name off the device, not from memory.
- Chasing strength instead of hardware. If a setup feels too weak, the device is more often the cause than the number on the bottle.
- Filling a pod to the very top. With no air gap, pressure changes push liquid out through the airway. Fill to just below the line.
