Why they exist
UK regulations cap nicotine-containing e-liquid bottles at 10ml. A 100ml bottle of nicotine liquid cannot be sold here. A 100ml bottle containing no nicotine can, so shortfills are supplied at 0mg with headroom left in the bottle, and the buyer adds nicotine separately. It is a direct consequence of the bottle-size rule.
Working out the shots
A standard nicotine shot is 10ml at 18mg or 20mg. The arithmetic is simple: the shot dilutes into the total volume.

Hardware
Shortfills are usually VG-heavy, which means they are intended for sub-ohm coils with large wicking ports. Putting one into a small pod kit designed for 50/50 is the most common cause of a coil burning out early.
Buying without nicotine
A shortfill on its own contains no nicotine and can be vaped as supplied if that is what you want. The shots are optional, sold separately, and are the only part of the purchase subject to the nicotine rules.
Shaking properly, and why it matters
VG is viscous and a nicotine shot does not disperse on its own. An under-mixed bottle gives an uneven result: strong at first, weak later, or the reverse. Cap the bottle and shake it hard for a full minute — longer than feels necessary. Some people leave a freshly mixed bottle to stand for a few hours afterwards, which lets the air bubbles settle and the flavour even out.
Steeping
Some shortfills, particularly darker dessert and tobacco blends, are said to improve after standing for a few days with the cap on. Fruit and menthol blends generally do not need it. This is a matter of preference rather than a rule — if a bottle tastes right straight away, there is nothing to wait for.
Storage and shelf life
Keep bottles closed, upright, out of direct sunlight and away from heat. Once a nicotine shot has been added the mixture behaves like any other nicotine liquid and will darken with age. Check the best-before date printed on the bottle.
Buying shots
Nicotine shots are sold separately because they are the only nicotine-containing part of the purchase and are therefore subject to the 10ml bottle limit. A 100ml shortfill needs two to reach roughly 3mg.
Choosing in three questions
Almost every liquid decision comes down to the same three, in this order.
- What does your device take? A pod kit or MTL tank wants 10ml 50/50 or nic salt. A sub-ohm kit wants a VG-heavy shortfill. Getting this wrong is what burns coils, and no change of flavour will fix it.
- What strength? Low-power devices are generally paired with the upper end of the range, higher-power devices with much lower strengths, because power decides how much liquid — and therefore how much nicotine — each puff delivers.
- What flavour? Only now. It is the part everyone starts with and the part that matters least to whether the setup works.
If a setup is not working, change one variable at a time and keep the other two fixed. Changing device, strength and flavour together leaves no way to tell which one was the problem.
